Learn Tajwid online: how to turn lessons into better practice

An online Tajwid lesson can explain a rule clearly, but the learning task continues when you begin to recite. Can you hear the feature being taught? Can you attempt it yourself? Can you apply the correction outside the example you have just repeated? Use those questions to build a practical learning plan and compare online course options.

Check the reading skills you will need

If letters, connected words or vowel marks are still difficult to recognize, describe that to your teacher before starting a rule-heavy programme. Reading support and pronunciation guidance can work together, but a lesson needs to take account of the text you can currently follow.

If you already read connected text, identify what you want help with: particular letter sounds, applying known rules or studying Tajwid in greater depth. A short unfamiliar passage may raise different questions from a passage you know by memory. Tell the institute about both.

Use an explain, demonstrate, recite and correct cycle

When a rule is introduced, ask for a brief explanation and a demonstration in the assigned text. Then read the example yourself. The important next step is specific feedback: what was accurate, what needs changing and which example should you practise again?

After a correction, try a second example chosen by your teacher. This gives you a chance to apply the skill rather than repeat a single familiar sound. Keep a note of the correction in words you understand, with the example you need to revisit.

  • Explain: identify the feature you are learning.
  • Demonstrate: listen to it in a clear example.
  • Recite: attempt the example aloud.
  • Correct: receive feedback and try again.
  • Transfer: apply the same skill in another example.

Give videos and apps a clear supporting role

A recording lets you return to an example; a written note helps you recall an explanation. Use these tools for a particular task instead of moving between unrelated lessons whenever a sound is difficult. Ask your teacher which reference to use so that your home practice follows the lesson.

Hearing an example does not establish whether your own attempt matches it. If a tool gives feedback, ask what that feedback covers and how an uncertain result should be checked. Keep questions about your recitation for the person guiding your learning.

Practise a small passage with one clear focus

Choose the section and correction assigned in your lesson. Read without racing to finish the page. Surah Al-Muzzammil, verse 4, calls for measured recitation; use a pace at which you can attend to the feature you are practising.

If a difficulty remains, mark the example and ask about it in the next lesson. A useful practice note is specific: which word, what you attempted and what you are unsure about. The aim is to return with a question your teacher can hear and address.

Ask how lessons and practice will work together

Before enrolling, confirm the suitable level, available teaching language, current fees, timings and lesson format with admissions. Ask what materials you will use and how you should bring questions from home practice into the next lesson.

You do not need to know every Tajwid term before making an enquiry. Describe what you can read now and what you find difficult. QAAF can discuss the programme options and next steps from that starting point.

Common questions

Can I start learning Tajwid online as a beginner?

Begin by describing your reading level. Adults building foundational reading and essential Tajwid can explore Bayan Basic. Children’s options include Tilawa for reading and Tajwid for recitation; discuss the suitable starting point with admissions.

Are video lessons enough to check my recitation?

Videos provide examples to listen to, but listening alone does not check your own pronunciation. Plan how your attempts and uncertain examples will receive feedback.

Does QAAF offer advanced Tajwid online?

Bayan Advanced is QAAF’s adult programme for deeper Tajwid study and practical application beyond the basics. Contact admissions to discuss your previous learning and the current arrangements.
